1. Overview of Data Protection

General

The following gives a simple overview of what happens to your personal information when you visit our website and use our mobile applications (Android/iOS). Personal information is any data with which you could be personally identified. References to "Service" in this policy include both the website and the mobile applications.

Who is responsible for data collection on this Service?
The data processing on this Service is carried out by the Service operator. You can find their contact details in the Impressum of this website.

2. Hosting and Content Delivery Networks (CDN)

Vercel

Our website is hosted by Vercel Inc., 340 S Lemon Ave #4133, Walnut, CA 91789, USA.

When you visit our website, Vercel collects various log files including your IP addresses. Vercel also uses this data to detect and prevent abuse. For more information, see Vercel's Privacy Policy: https://vercel.com/legal/privacy-policy.

3. User Authentication and Database

Supabase

We use Supabase for user authentication and database services. Supabase is provided by Supabase, Inc., 970 Toa Payoh North #07-04, Singapore 319000.

When you sign up or log in, your email address and authentication data are stored in Supabase. This is necessary to provide you with your personal account and access to your saved recipes. For more details, please refer to Supabase's Privacy Policy: https://supabase.com/privacy.

Third-Party Sign-In (Google & Apple)

You can choose to sign in to our Service using third-party providers such as Google or Apple. If you choose this option, we will receive basic profile information from these providers, typically your name, email address, and profile picture. This data is used solely to create and manage your Treecipes account.

4. User-Generated Content and Image Storage

Recipe Content

When you create recipes on Treecipes, we store your recipe data (ingredients, instructions, descriptions) in our database hosted on Supabase. This data is associated with your user account and is necessary to provide the Service.

Image Storage

Images you upload for your recipes are stored in Supabase Storage. Images are processed (cropped and compressed) before upload to optimize storage and delivery. By uploading images, you acknowledge that:

  • Images will be publicly accessible as part of your published recipes;
  • Images are stored on servers which may be located outside of the EU;
  • You can delete your images by removing them from your recipes or by requesting account deletion.

Content Retention

Your User Content (recipes and images) is retained as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you with our services. If you delete a recipe, the associated data is removed from our active database, though backups may be retained for a limited period in accordance with our data retention policies.

5. Email Notifications and Newsletter

Resend

We send emails through Resend (Resend, Inc., USA). For each email, Resend processes your email address and the content of the message. For more information, see Resend's Privacy Policy: https://resend.com/legal/privacy-policy.

Account Notifications

If you have an account, we may email you when someone comments on your recipe, likes your comment, or replies to it. You can turn each of these notifications off in your account settings.

Newsletter

If you subscribe to our newsletter when you sign up or in your account settings, we store your email address and, if you provided one, your first name as a contact with Resend, so we can send you news about Treecipes. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR).

You can unsubscribe at any time with the link in every newsletter or in your account settings. When you unsubscribe or delete your account, your contact is marked as unsubscribed with Resend and no further newsletters are sent.

6. Recipe Conversion and Conversion Feedback

Recipe Conversion

When you convert a recipe (by pasting text, importing a URL, sharing content from another app, or scanning a document), the recipe text is sent to our servers and processed by an AI provider to turn it into a Treecipes recipe; when you save a recipe, the same AI providers translate it into the other languages Treecipes is available in. Depending on the model, this is Google Gemini (Google LLC / Google Ireland Limited) or Anthropic Claude (Anthropic PBC). Only the recipe text and our instructions are sent to the AI provider, not your account details.

We store a record of each conversion so we can find and fix conversion errors and improve conversion quality. The record contains the submitted recipe text, the source URL if you provided one, how the conversion was started, the exchange with the AI provider, the outcome, and, if you are logged in, your user ID. Please do not include personal information in recipe text you submit for conversion.

Conversion Feedback

After a conversion you can rate the result and tell us what went wrong. We store the reasons you select, your optional comment, the interface language, and whether you used the website or the app. Your feedback is linked to the conversion record and, if you are logged in, to your account.

If you are logged in, you can choose to be notified once the problem is fixed. Only in that case do we send a single email to the address of your account, using our email provider Resend (Resend, Inc.). We do not use this email address for anything else.

Deletion

If you delete your account, your conversion feedback and comments are deleted with it (see our Data Deletion page). Conversion records are kept for debugging and quality purposes, but they are no longer linked to an account. You can ask us to delete conversion records at any time using the contact details in the Impressum.

7. Mobile App Features and Permissions

Camera and Photo Library

Our mobile app may request access to your device's camera and photo library. This is required only when you actively choose to upload images for your recipes or scan documents. We only access the specific photos you select or take within the app.

Local Data Processing (On-Device ML)

The mobile app uses Google ML Kit for text recognition and document scanning features. All image processing and text extraction happens completely locally on your device (On-Device). Your photos and scanned documents are not sent to Google servers for processing. The extracted text is only sent to our servers if you choose to convert it into a recipe (see section 6) or save the recipe to your account.

Share Intent and Content Import

Our mobile app allows you to share text or URLs from other apps (e.g., your browser) directly to Treecipes. The shared content is then converted into a recipe as described in section 6. Only the recipe data you confirm is saved to your account.

8. Analytics and Tools

Anonymous Search Statistics

When you submit a recipe search, we store anonymous search statistics to improve search quality and understand which recipes or topics users are looking for. These statistics include the search term, the number of results, language preferences, the source of the search, and the time of the search. They are not linked to your account, IP address, device, browser, or session.

Vercel Analytics

We use Vercel Analytics to understand how our website is used and to improve the user experience. Vercel Analytics collects anonymous usage data. It does not collect personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, email addresses, or IP addresses.

Vercel Speed Insights

We additionally use Vercel Speed Insights to measure anonymized Core Web Vitals (such as load time, interactivity, and layout stability). No cookies are set and no personally identifiable information is collected.

Google Fonts

This site uses so-called web fonts provided by Google for the uniform representation of fonts. The Google Fonts are installed locally or cached to minimize requests to Google servers where possible. If your browser does not support web fonts, a standard font is used by your computer.

9. Your Rights

You have the right to request information about your stored personal data, its origin, its recipients, and the purpose of its collection at any time. You also have the right to request that it be corrected, blocked, or deleted.
